Paraty and Ilha Grande: why not both?
There is a question that comes aboard every week, almost always on the first night, with the boat still docked at the marina: “if you had to choose, Paraty or Ilha Grande?”. The people writing this are the crew of the Albatroz, our group’s 23 meter schooner, which leaves Paraty and anchors in the waters of Ilha Grande week after week. The bias is on the table from the start: our job is, literally, to connect one to the other. But it is exactly because we live on that route that the house answer never changes: the choice is a false one. Paraty and Ilha Grande are neighbors on the same bay, entered the UNESCO list together and produce trips so different that each completes exactly what the other lacks. This guide explains why the pair is worth more than either alone and shows the two ways to do both: the one we recommend and the independent one.
The quick answer
Both, on the same trip. Paraty holds the best preserved historic center on the Brazilian coast; Ilha Grande holds the wildest shoreline in Rio de Janeiro state. Between one and the other lies a single night of sailing or half a day of bus and flex boat, and there are two ways to stitch the pair together: the three night expedition that sleeps on board and solves transport, bed and food in one move, or the independent version, which asks for five to six days and a well planned connection. If your days really only fit one: history, food and rainy days call for Paraty; beach, trail and the urge to disappear call for Ilha Grande.
What Paraty does better
Paraty is the densest cultural destination on the Costa Verde, and that is no small thing: the historic center stopped in time through decline and became heritage through stubbornness. The pé de moleque streets were leveled in the 18th century so the tide could come in and wash the town at the full and new moons, four churches tell of four social classes in the colonial city, and the townhouses are still occupied by studios, bookshops and cachaça houses where the tasting comes with the producer across the counter.
The table is the second argument: caiçara cooking in clay pots, the day’s fish and the gabriela, the clove and cinnamon cachaça that is part of the local curriculum. And there is the trump card nobody puts in the spreadsheet: Paraty is the best rainy day destination in the region, because church, museum, cafe and distillery all work wet.
Paraty’s sea exists and is generous, with about 60 beaches and 65 islands almost all reached by boat, but the honest yardstick is this: the classic R$ 60 schooner shows you a pretty, domesticated sea. The raw spectacle belongs to the neighbor. The heavyweight exception is Saco do Mamanguá, the tropical fjord south of town, which goes head to head with any corner of the bay.

What Ilha Grande does better
On Ilha Grande, nature is in charge. No car moves on the island’s 193 km²: transport is boat, bicycle or your legs, and the 16 numbered trails of the state park work as the road system, charging no one anything. The usual honesty: on culture, the island competes with an aqueduct from 1893 and a prison museum, and loses by a landslide to the townhouses across the water. Vila do Abraão’s nightlife dies early, the food is honest village fish and a rainy day runs short. If you are after history and gastronomy, cross the bay and come out ahead.
Bay neighbors, partners in the title
Here comes the fact that changes the conversation: the two share the same piece of sea. Ilha Grande closes off the bay that carries its name, and Paraty lives at the bottom of it. In 2019, UNESCO recognized the ensemble “Paraty and Ilha Grande” as World Heritage in a single mixed listing, Brazil’s first to combine culture and nature in the same dossier. Not even the heritage committee managed to choose between them.
In traveler practice, the neighborhood means the connection is short: by land, Colitur’s L101 line links Angra to Paraty for R$ 27.50 in about 2 hours, and the flex boat crosses from Abraão to the mainland in 20 to 25 minutes. By sea, one night of sailing separates the pier of one from the sand of the other. The pair works because their strengths do not overlap: one day you dine among lanterns in a 300 year old townscape, the next you wake up facing a beach without a single kiosk.
The way we recommend: sleeping between the two
If the choice were ours, and every week it is, the pair gets solved without changing beds. The 3 night Albatroz expedition boards in Paraty at 6 pm and leaves the first night free in the historic center: you dine among the lanterns and sleep in your cabin, with the boat docked at the marina. The crossing happens while you sleep. The next day, the chef’s breakfast is served with Lagoa Azul in the window, the afternoon runs loose in Vila do Abraão and, on the third morning, the boat lands early at Praia do Pouso: 20 minutes of trail and Lopes Mendes appears nearly empty, hours before the day-trip schooners. The afternoon ends at Lagoa Verde and the return is a sail across the bay, with a coffee stop at Praia do Jurumirim. The argument is not an adjective, it is contrast: whoever does the pair independently spends the mornings at ticket windows, in lines and behind luggage carts. Whoever sleeps on board spends those same mornings inside the itinerary, at the hours when Lagoa Azul and Lopes Mendes are still just sea.

The middle connection fits in half a day: early flex boat out of Abraão, bus or flex to Angra, L101 to Paraty, arrival mid-afternoon with energy left for the end of the day in the center.
