What is the best Costa Verde destination for couples?
This article answers one question, it does not assemble a list. We have welcomed couples at our front desk in Ilhabela since 2016 and take couples out on the sea of Paraty every week, so the bias is owned from the start: we have lodging in one destination and a boat in the other two. What balances the scale is the experience of watching, year after year, which trips for two come home happy and which come home feeling like a logistics exercise. That is the yardstick we use to answer: what is the best Costa Verde destination for a couple’s trip?
The quick answer
Ilhabela. Not because it is the most beautiful (all three are, each in its own language), but because it is the only Costa Verde destination where a full day for two happens without a car, without a mandatory boat and without a clock: calm beach in the morning, a head-on sunset at the end of the afternoon and dinner within walking distance. Romance is continuity, and Ilhabela is the destination that does not interrupt.
That said, there are Paraty couples and Ilha Grande couples, and the second half of this guide delivers those alternatives with the same conviction. First, the winner’s case.
Why Ilhabela wins the decision
The sunset is head-on. The channel beaches face west, so the sun drops behind the Serra do Mar, across the water, and the whole island watches. No other destination in the region delivers the sunset as a daily, free event that requires no travel: the right spots are in best sunset spots in Ilhabela.
The calm beaches were made for two. Feiticeira without a single kiosk, Pacuíba with shaded lawn, Julião with a sea that barely breaks: the full repertoire, with micro-plans for each, is in the best beaches in Ilhabela for couples. On where to sleep, the interest is ours and so is the recommendation: for a couple that wants a suite, the Vilarejo, our group’s suites three minutes from the hostel, closes the door on the world and keeps the pool heated to 32°C and the bars a short walk away. Where Ilhabela loses, said straight
Owner’s honesty: if the couple’s definition of romance is history and the table, Paraty wins. If it is total isolation, Ilha Grande wins. And Ilhabela has flaws of its own: on summer holidays the channel jams and the island fills up, and the borrachudo fly does not respect honeymoons, so repellent is a toiletry bag item. If you can travel in May, June or September, you get the island in its best version for two: clear sea, empty beaches and lower rates.
The alternatives, by couple style
The history, food and wine couple: Paraty. The historic center at the end of the afternoon, when the lanterns come on and the townhouses turn candle-colored, is the most romantic scene on the Costa Verde, and we say that while living in the competing destination. Dinner of caiçara cooking in a colonial townhouse, the cachaça house with a tasting, and the tide flooding the streets at the full and new moons complete the package. What Paraty does not deliver is a beach at the door: the beautiful sea is a schooner ride away.
The couple that wants to vanish from the map: Ilha Grande. No cars, no schedule and beaches earned by trail, the island is the destination for couples who measure romance in silence. Saco do Céu, a cove so enclosed the sea turns into a mirror, holds nights of stars reflected in still water. The price is the logistics: a boat crossing, rigid timetables and a village where everything closes early. For this profile, that is not a flaw, it is the product: the repertoire is in the most beautiful beaches of Ilha Grande.
The couple that wants both worlds in a single plan: the sea of Paraty, sleeping on board. Here comes the house’s second recommendation, with the usual declared bias: the Albatroz expedition is, in practice, the most complete plan for two that our group runs. A double cabin with air conditioning and blackout, the chef’s dinner on deck, a jacuzzi on board and, on the two night route, the bonfire night on the Mamanguá beach, at the foot of the Sugarloaf peak, with the boat anchored inside the fjord. The math of a day for two
Romance also gets planned with a calculator, so here are the 2026 numbers for a couple on the mid-range profile, taken from our full breakdowns of each destination. In Ilhabela, a day for two closes between R$ 500 and 980 per couple, with a shared guesthouse room, one good meal a day and a paid excursion every other day; the full spreadsheet is in Ilhabela travel costs. In Paraty, the range is similar, with the detail that sleeping outside the historic grid, ten minutes on foot, cuts the nightly rate in half and pays for a townhouse dinner. On Ilha Grande, a three day itinerary for a couple lands around R$ 2,100 to 2,600 all in, and the heaviest item is not the bed, it is the boat: taxi boats and speedboats enter the bill of almost every plan.
The practical reading: all three fit the same wallet, but Ilhabela and Paraty let the couple adjust spending day by day, while Ilha Grande charges the commitment at the entrance.
How to decide in three questions
If the table below ends in a tie, we break it at the front desk with three questions. First: what ruins a trip for you two, boredom or exhaustion? Boredom calls for Ilhabela, which changes plans every day; exhaustion calls for Paraty, which you walk end to end in flip flops. Third: how many hours of logistics can you tolerate between home and the first swim? Under five, Ilhabela; Ilha Grande asks a full travel day of anyone leaving from São Paulo, and that decides more honeymoons than any scenery.

For most couples, the answer is Ilhabela, for the reason that carries this whole article: it is the destination where a day for two needs no intermission.
