The best beaches in Ilhabela for couples (and where to end the day)
There is a type of guest we recognize from a distance: they arrive as a pair, in no hurry, and their first question is not “which beach is the most famous”, it is “which beach is the calmest”. We live in Ilhabela and welcome couples like this every week, people celebrating an anniversary, a delayed honeymoon or just the luck of landing the same days off. This guide is the answer we give at the front desk, in writing.
The logic of a beach for two is different from the logic of a beautiful beach. Here the postcard scenery counts for less and the sum of the whole day counts for more: sand without someone else’s speaker, water you can float in while talking, a sunset that does not require a car and a dinner within walking distance. Ilhabela delivers that sequence better than almost anywhere on the São Paulo coast, because the channel beaches face west: the sun sets behind the Serra do Mar mountains, across the water, and the whole island watches.
The five beaches we recommend for two
Praia da Feiticeira
Two hundred and fifty meters of sand in the south of the island, without one kiosk, without one loudspeaker. The historic manor in the background and the clear water do the rest. When the sea is calm, snorkeling there turns up ornamental fish and, now and then, a sea turtle. It is the beach we suggest when a couple says “we want a day with nobody around”. Micro-action: put together a picnic in the Vila before going, because at Feiticeira you cannot even buy water.
Praia do Julião
The gentle neighbor. The sea barely breaks, the Ilhote da Prainha islet anchors the view and you can rent a stand-up paddle board and paddle as a pair without a scare. It is small, which works in your favor: nobody shouts, nobody runs. Micro-action: stay until 4 pm, when the tour groups leave and the beach gives the silence back.
Praia da Pacuíba
In the north, 127 meters of sand with a lawn in the shade of chapéu-de-praia trees (a broad native shade tree), past a short trail that discourages anyone hauling a big cooler. It gets few people even in January. The clear water has rocky nooks full of fish for whoever brings a mask. Micro-action: arrive mid-morning with a mat and a book; Pacuíba is a beach for staying, not passing through.
Praia do Veloso
Slightly darker sand, a calm sea that stays shallow near the edge, discreet kiosks at the left corner. The hidden charm: the remains of the ship Aymoré, wrecked in 1920, rest right offshore at 4 to 18 meters deep, and the island’s dive operators visit the site regularly. A first dive as a couple is the kind of story nobody forgets to tell. Micro-action: ask at the kiosk about the next day’s dive departures.
Praia do Viana
Small, almost a balcony of sand on the edge of the channel, with a traditional family restaurant running the show for decades. It is a long-lunch beach: shrimp casquinha (a baked shrimp dish served in a shell), cold beer, sea at your shins. Micro-action: go Monday to Thursday and book the whole afternoon, with no plan B.

The sunset, which is the day’s second shift
In Ilhabela the sunset is an appointment. In winter the sun goes down between 5:30 and 6 pm; in summer, around 7 pm. Three spots that work for couples:
The deck at Ponta das Canas, at the far north, was built for kitesurfers and became a free public viewpoint, with the lighthouse beside it and colorful kites cutting across the sky at the end of the afternoon. Praia da Armação, just before it, gathers sailors and a wide sea that turns entirely gold as the sun drops. The night after the beach

The way we most like to close that day is at Floresta Bar, our group’s bar in the historic center: tables set in the middle of the forest, signature drinks and live music on scheduled nights, with that moment when the lights come on between the trees and someone at the next table asks where you are from. Where to sleep as a couple
Here the interest is openly declared: the lodging is ours. For couples, the house recommendation is Vilarejo, our group’s suites three minutes from the hostel, in the historic center: a guesthouse-style room with a door that shuts the world out and, a short walk away, the 32°C heated pool, the bars and the programming of a lively hostel. It is the mix of quiet and buzz in a dose each couple adjusts on their own.
A day for two, hour by hour
For those who like a ready-made plan, this is the day we most often put together for couples, tested across many happy check-outs:
9 am, unhurried breakfast and a small backpack: sarong, snorkel mask, repellent, water and a snack bought in the Vila. 10 am, Feiticeira or Pacuíba, depending on which side of the island the day favors; both reward whoever arrives before the crowd. 1:30 pm, a slow lunch at Viana or at a Julião kiosk, sea in front and nothing scheduled behind. 4 pm, the afternoon swim, the best of the day, with the light already dropping. 4:45 pm, the way back with a stop at a viewpoint or straight to the Ponta das Canas deck, depending on the season and the sun’s schedule. 6 pm, sunset accomplished, that couple’s silence that needs no commentary. 7:30 pm, a shower, light clothes and the Vila on foot: dinner, dessert while strolling the waterfront and, if it is a music night, the end of the evening among the trees.
The detail that makes this day work is the short packing list and the even shorter agenda. Ilhabela punishes tight itineraries and rewards whoever leaves room for the unplanned: the turtle that shows up while snorkeling, the kiosk that talks you into one more hour, the sky that decides to put on a show off schedule.
And if the trip lands in winter, enjoy the season’s bonus: between May 16 and August 16 humpback whales pass along the island’s coast, and heading out to sea as a couple to look for them is a celebration plan that is hard to top. The whale watching departures leave from the historic center, and the honesty is the usual: whales sign no attendance contract, and that is what makes the encounter so good when it happens.
Before you close the bag
Two honest warnings from people who live here. First: repellent in the bag always, because the borrachudo (the tiny biting fly of the island’s clean rivers) has no respect for romance, and it bites most at the end of the afternoon, exactly at sunset time. Second: if the idea is peace, avoid long holiday weekends and New Year’s; April, May, June and September are the months when the island runs at the right pace for two, and winter here is well worth it, with clear water and an empty town.
