The best Costa Verde destinations for couples

Ten years welcoming couples in Ilhabela and taking couples out on the Paraty sea taught us something that contradicts the common sense of trip planning: couples do not choose destinations, they choose scenes. Nobody comes home from a trip saying “the municipality was great”; they come home talking about the exact dinner, the exact sunset, the beach where there was no one else. So this article is built the way couples remember: a list of the best experiences for two on the Costa Verde, organized by destination, for you to collect your own.
A route warning before we start: this is a menu, not a verdict. If what you want is a single answer, the “just tell me the best destination” kind, we wrote exactly that article, with a declared winner and the reasoning, in which is the best Costa Verde destination for couples. Here the spirit is different: gather the scenes and let the itinerary grow out of them.
Ilhabela: the sunset as a daily program
The sunset head-on, every day. Ilhabela’s channel beaches face west, and the sun drops behind the Serra do Mar, across the water. It is the only destination in the region where the sunset is a guaranteed, free program with no travel involved: just be on the waterfront at 5:40pm with someone beside you. The right spots, from the pier to the beach, are in the best sunset spots in Ilhabela.
The calm beach that works like a park bench. Feiticeira without kiosks, Julião with a sea that barely breaks, Pacuíba with a shaded lawn: Ilhabela has a repertoire of small beaches that work as hideouts for two, mapped move by move in the best beaches for couples in Ilhabela.
Sleeping in a dome with the channel in the window. The scene in the opening photo is our declared contribution to this list: at Hostel da Vila, our group’s eco lodge in the historic center, the geodesic dome has a double bed under a ceiling of wooden triangles and the channel sea appearing in the window at dawn. Couples who prefer a classic suite stay at the Vilarejo, the group’s suites three minutes away, and use the hostel’s pool heated to 32°C as a post-hike program.
Whales in winter. Between May 16 and August 16, humpbacks cross the São Sebastião channel, and heading out to sea as a couple to look for them is a birthday program hard to top, with the usual honesty: sightings are not guaranteed. The full case for the cold season is in Ilhabela in winter.
Paraty: the most beautiful night in the region
Dinner among the colonial houses, lanterns lit. When the day-trip crowds leave, Paraty’s historic center changes owners: the stone streets empty, the light turns candle-colored and a caiçara dinner in an 18th century townhouse becomes the most romantic night on the Costa Verde. We say that while living in the neighboring destination, which gives the sentence some weight.
The tide rising through the streets. On full and new moons, the sea comes up through the low streets of the center, designed in the 18th century for exactly that. Watching the water take over the paving stones while holding hands, everyone barefoot and laughing, is free and unpredictable in just the right dose: check the week’s tide table before locking your dates, because the show has a schedule and does not warn twice.
Cachaça by appointment. Paraty has produced artisanal cachaça since the gold cycle, and a tasting at a roadside distillery, between cane fields and mountains, is the rainy afternoon program couples thank us for most. It ends, of course, with a bottle split between your bags.
The lazy schooner. The classic tour leaving the pier for about R$ 60 per person is one of the rare boat programs where the couple decides nothing: the bay drifts by, the swimming stops appear, and the only task of the day is choosing a side of the deck.
Ilha Grande: the romance of isolation
The stars of Saco do Céu. The cove is so enclosed the sea turns into a mirror, and on clear nights the stars reflect on the still water. It is the kind of scene that does not fit in a phone photo, which only improves the program: the two of you keep the monopoly on the memory.
Lopes Mendes before the world wakes up. The island’s most famous beach changes personality by the hour: packed at noon, nearly deserted in the early morning. Early-riser couples who cross the Pouso trail first thing get 2.5 km of practically private sand; the full guide is in Lopes Mendes beach.
The trail that ends at a beach with no kiosk. The repertoire of coves you can only reach on foot or by boat, from Aventureiro to the southern beaches, is in the most beautiful beaches of Ilha Grande. The price of isolation is a logistics of rigid schedules; for a certain kind of couple, that is exactly the charm.

Mamanguá and the Paraty sea: the night on board
The cabin on the expedition. Here it is, in our declared owner’s opinion, the most complete experience for two this coast offers: the expedition of the Albatroz, the group’s 23 meter schooner, with a double cabin with air conditioning and blackout curtains, the chef’s dinner on deck, an onboard jacuzzi and the boat sleeping at anchor inside Saco do Mamanguá, the tropical fjord south of Paraty. On the two night route, the scene that defines the trip is the bonfire luau on the beach, at the foot of Mamanguá’s Sugarloaf, with the boat waiting on the dark water. It starts at around R$ 990 per person in 2026, payable in up to 10 installments, with meals and activities included.
The fjord in silence. Even without sleeping aboard, Saco do Mamanguá deserves its place on this list: eight kilometers of enclosed sea between mountains, no road, with caiçara houses and mangrove. The Pão de Açúcar trail, a steep early morning climb, delivers the view that opens this entire site.
How to turn the list into a trip
Three ways to use this menu. The one week couple picks two destinations and four scenes, with no guilt over the ones left behind: the Costa Verde rewards those who come back. The holiday weekend couple picks a single destination and does its scenes slowly. And the couple that does not want to choose takes the shortcut of the comparison, which decides for you with its criteria in the open: which is the best destination for couples.
On where to sleep, one piece of advice that surprises first-trip couples: do not cross hostels off the search. Many of them have private rooms for less than a guesthouse, with breakfast included and a social life you use when you want and ignore when you do not. The honest comparison of the three formats, with the prices and flaws of each, is in hostel, guesthouse or hotel.
A pocket reminder before booking: the day-by-day numbers for two, destination by destination, are in Costa Verde travel costs, and the season changes everything, both the price and the crowd sharing the sunset with you. May, June and September are the months when the region looks most like the photos.
Deep down, a trip for two is an album you assemble before it happens. Pick three scenes from this list, argue gently over the fourth and start with the sunset: the guide to the best sunset spots in Ilhabela sets the trip’s first appointment at 5:40pm.
