How to plan a Costa Verde adventure trip

There is a common misunderstanding about the Costa Verde: that it is a destination for rest, beach and caipirinha, and that real adventure lives at another address. We live here, spend the year sending travelers out to the trails and getting them back with blisters and good stories, and we disagree with data: this corridor between Rio and São Paulo packs in 16 km crossings, peaks of nearly a thousand meters, headlamp hours in the forest before dawn and enough sea to fill any week with paddling, masks and sails.

What is usually missing is not adventure: it is a method for stacking it all without breaking down on day three. This guide is that method. The logic, the blocks and a week built day by day, with the effort stated at its real size.

The logic: blocks, not a list

The classic mistake of the adrenaline traveler is treating the region as a checklist and alternating without criteria: hard trail, party, hard trail, boat, hard trail. On paper it works; in the legs, it does not. What works is thinking in three blocks and giving whole days to each: a block of hard trails, a block of freshwater for active recovery and a block of sea. The order matters less than the grouping, with one exception: never stack the two big trails on consecutive days.

Block 1: the trails that separate the curious

The Costa Verde has two walks we call formative: whoever does one of them goes home telling the story, whoever does both goes home changed.

The first is Pico do Papagaio, on Ilha Grande: 6 km of continuous climbing through dense forest to 982 meters, leaving Vila do Abraão in the small hours, between 2 and 3 am, to catch the sunrise at the top. At that hour the park requires a guide or accredited leader, and the full program takes 5 to 7 hours. It is the widest view on the Rio side, tinted orange, with the whole bay waking up below.

The second is the Bonete crossing, in Ilhabela: 16 km from Ponta da Sela to the most famous caiçara village on the São Paulo coast, fording rivers and passing the Laje and Areado waterfalls, which work as swimming stops. It is 4 to 6 hours each way, more for the distance than the technique, and the reward is sleeping in a roadless community of 300 residents. Return by boat the next day: it closes the loop and spares the knees. The details are in the guide to the Bonete trail, and the two walks appear side by side in the ranking of the best hikes on the Costa Verde.

Whoever wants a third big effort finds it at Mamanguá’s Sugarloaf, in Paraty, a short 425 meter climb with fixed ropes and the view of the whole fjord; and the catalog of smaller climbs in Ilhabela is in the best hikes on the island.

Block 2: freshwater, the active recovery

Between one big effort and the next, the region offers the best kind of rest: waterfalls. In Ilhabela, the self-guided trail to the Gato waterfall, from Castelhanos, and the swimming holes of the south; in Paraty, the falls along the Paraty-Cunha road; in Ubatuba, a pool with a natural rock slide. A waterfall day stretches the legs without draining the tank, and the full catalog, with access and effort for each, is in the best waterfalls on the Costa Verde and the Ilhabela waterfalls.

Block 3: the sea, solved in one move

The sea block of an adventure week usually turns into a puzzle: a schooner day here, a kayak rental there, a transfer in between, and in the end you are left with logistics and short on sea. The solution we argue for, with the declared interest of the people who operate the route, is concentrating everything into an expedition that sleeps on board: the Albatroz, our group’s 23 meter schooner, leaves Paraty on routes of 2 to 5 nights that bundle the entire activity package, snorkeling in the Ilha Grande lagoons, transparent kayak and SUP in the coves, the 20 minute trail to Lopes Mendes before the day-trip schooners arrive, and the Sugarloaf climb starting where the boat slept, in the Mamanguá.

In three nights, the sea block is done: lodging, chef’s food, transport and activities in a single move, without repacking a backpack. If you prefer to stitch it together yourself, the mask spots are in the guide to snorkeling in Ilha Grande, the region-wide floating overview in snorkeling on the Costa Verde and the logistics of ferries and flex boats in how to get to Ilha Grande. It works; just reserve an extra day for the stitching.

And if your trip falls between May 16 and August 16, the sea block gains an extra chapter no other period offers: the humpback whale season passing along the coast, with sightings peaking in June and July. It is worth drawing the week to cross paths with them.

The week, built day by day

The design we recommend for seven days, arriving through São Paulo:

  • Days 1 and 2, Ilhabela. Arrival, ferry, base set up and the first climb: Pico do Baepi with an accredited guide, leaving before 8 am. The next day, the Bonete crossing with a night in the village.
  • Day 3, Ilhabela. Back from Bonete by boat in the morning. An afternoon of waterfall or beach with no commitments: this is the recovery day, and it is not optional. Rested legs today mean a whole crossing tomorrow.
  • Day 4, transfer to Paraty. The Rio-Santos makes the transition worth it: roadside viewpoints, a beach stop. Late afternoon in the historic center, boarding the schooner at 6 pm.
  • Days 5, 6 and 7, expedition. The entire sea block: Ilha Grande, the lagoons, Lopes Mendes early, or the Mamanguá route with the bonfire night and the trail, depending on the departure. Disembark and head home.

Whoever has more days stretches it in the 10 day Costa Verde itinerary; whoever has fewer cuts day 4 and picks a single block. The week’s realistic budget, with three spending profiles, is in Costa Verde travel costs.

The base in Ilhabela

The São Paulo half of the week asks for a base that understands this rhythm, and here the recommendation is homegrown, said with the usual transparency: Hostel da Vila, our group’s eco lodge in the historic center, on the channel side, has worked as a base camp for ten years. The scene that sums it up: coming back from a trail mid-afternoon, dropping the boots at the door and sinking into the pool heated to 32°C with the property’s Atlantic Forest all around, planning the next climb with a map in hand. The week’s program, from climbing to live music, goes out on our Instagram.

Kit and common mistakes

The week’s kit fits in a soft backpack: shoes or boots with real soles (wet roots are soap), a headlamp for the Papagaio’s small hours, a big bottle, serious repellent (Ilhabela’s borrachudo does not respect weak brands), a rain jacket, your own snorkel mask and cash for the villages without signal.

The mistakes we see most, in order: stacking Papagaio and Bonete on consecutive days (the legs charge interest), ignoring the weather window (big trails are done in the morning, because the mountains manufacture cloud in the afternoon), underestimating cash (a village without signal does not take cards), and traveling in summer expecting dry trails. Adventure season here is winter, from May to August: firm ground, open air, calm seas for sailing and, as a bonus, the whales passing offshore, as the guide to the best time to visit the Costa Verde tells it.

In the end, planning an adventure trip on the Costa Verde is less about courage and more about rhythm: big effort, recovery, sea, in that beat. The geography supplies the rest, and supplies it with a generosity few regions in the country can match. Pick the week, respect the blocks and let the mountains and the sea fight over your attention. They have known how to do that forever.
