Why choose a hostel even when traveling as a couple?

There is a conversation that happens every week at our reception. A couple arrives somewhat wary, usually because one of the two chose the place and the other came along “trusting”. On day three, the person who came along trusting asks whether the Dome has a free date on the next holiday. We wrote this article to move that conversation up by a few months.

The people writing run Hostel da Vila, an eco lodge in Ilhabela’s historic center, and the interest here is declared: we think a hostel is an excellent choice for couples, but only when the hostel was designed for it. On to the argument, starting with the objection.

”But isn’t a hostel a dorm?”

That is the image that stalls the decision, and it is about fifteen years out of date. A shared dorm is one of the things a hostel offers, usually the cheapest, and it remains great for solo travelers. But our house has a whole list of private accommodations, and none of them looks like a hotel room: geodesic domes with their own deck, treehouses suspended on the hillside, a hand-painted kombi, a sailboat on dry land, a lighthouse with a lookout, yurts, tipis, a cabin, a caiçara cottage.

In all of them, the door closes and the world stays outside. A real double bed, air conditioning and amenities that vary by accommodation (the team explains what each one has before you book), and a level of privacy that, honestly, beats many a corridor hotel: your veranda faces the forest, not the neighbor’s window.

The real difference between our house and a conventional guesthouse is not in the privacy of the night. It is in what exists when the two of you decide to leave the room.

What ten years of couples taught us

Since 2016, more than 65,000 guests have passed through here, and a growing slice of them arrives in pairs. Watching that line of couples for a decade, we learned two things that matter for your decision.

The first: the couple that gets the most out of the house is the one that treats the lodging as part of the trip, not as logistics. Whoever chooses to sleep in a kombi or a lighthouse arrives with the story already started; the room becomes a topic at dinner, a photo in the family group chat, a reason to come back and “test the other one”.

The second: traveling as a couple does not have to mean traveling in isolation. Some of the most beautiful reunions we have witnessed began at a shared table here: couples from different cities who met at happy hour and now travel together every year. The hostel gives back to a couple something routine steals: new friends made together.

The couple’s equation: privacy at night, the world by day

A trip for two has a secret nobody puts on the anniversary card: spending seven whole days exclusively with each other, breakfast through dinner, tires even people in love. The best days of a couple’s trip usually have a third presence: a living place, new people, a story that belongs to neither of you.

That is the equation a hostel designed for couples solves. By day and in the early evening, you have a deck with music, a long table where two more always fit, a happy hour where the couple from the neighboring dome tells you about the trail they did that morning. Social exactly as much as you want: joining everything, a little or nothing is a choice renewed every day, as we explain in the article about the house’s weekly schedule.

And when the night calls for retreat, the internal path climbs through the forest to a door that is yours alone. Nobody in the bunk above. Nobody but the wind in the canopy.

The scenes that make the memory

A trip for two is judged, years later, by half a dozen scenes. These are the ones couples take from here.

The winter pool. The house pool is heated to 32°C all year, and it is in July that it turns into a movie scene: steam rising off the water, the dark forest around it, the air ten degrees colder than the water. Couples who came “off season” discover they came in exactly the right season. We have argued that full thesis in the article on Ilhabela in winter.

The Floresta deck. The Floresta Bar is the house bar, with signature drinks and live music. For a couple, it solves an underrated logistical problem: the best night of the trip twenty steps from the bed, no taxi, no designated driver, no watching the clock. When the party is good and the bed is close, the night has a different length.

Sunrise in the Dome. The house’s sea view belongs to the Dome: the triangular window frames the São Sebastião channel and the mountains of the mainland. Waking up there, opening the curtain without leaving the duvet and watching the day arrive over the channel is the kind of morning that reorganizes the whole trip.

The sunset on foot. In the late afternoon, the channel turns golden and the couple only needs to walk a few minutes to watch. We listed the best spots in the guide to the best sunset spots in Ilhabela.

The morning you both said yes to yoga. The house’s schedule is optional, and that is exactly why it works for couples: joining becomes a breakfast decision, not a package item. The classic scene is one of the two convincing the other to try the class in the courtyard, both laughing at their own poses, and the activity becoming an inside joke that runs through the trip. A couple that laughs together in the morning picks a restaurant without fighting at night. We have no scientific study on this, only ten years of field observation.

And the island around it helps

Ilhabela is generous with couples: calm beaches on the channel side, waterfalls after short walks, the historic center for dinner hand in hand. We gathered the best beaches for couples in Ilhabela and a 3 day itinerary that works well as a getaway for two. And if the question is still which destination, we compared the candidates in the article on the best Costa Verde destination for couples.

On timing: each season delivers a different couple. Summer is the high-energy one, late-afternoon swims and the Floresta’s fullest nights. Autumn and spring are the quiet months, with the island emptier and prices gentler. And winter, as we said, is the secret: we go month by month in the guide to the best time to visit Ilhabela.

The math that works out

Speaking frankly about money, without a price table (prices vary with date and accommodation, and lying here would be easy): the structure a couple actually uses on a trip, a heated pool, a bar with live music, a daily schedule, 8,000 m² to get lost in, usually lives in hotels of a category well above what our private rooms cost. The hostel inverts the logic of the spend: instead of paying for services you will not use, you pay for a living place and choose how much of it to live. The budget left over goes to what makes the memory: the better dinner, the boat trip, the extra day.

Who a hostel for two does not work for

The usual honesty: if your dream trip is absolute silence and room service, our house is not the answer. On party nights the Floresta plays until late, and the social life, though optional, is always visible. Couples on a contemplative honeymoon may prefer another beach, literally.

And there is the middle path, which is also ours: the Vilarejo, the group’s suites three minutes from the hostel. A guesthouse room, in standard, superior and family categories, and full access to the house structure: pool, bars, schedule. It is the natural upgrade for the couple that wants the hostel’s life with a guesthouse night, and the frequent choice of those who come back with kids a few years later.

The third day

Back to the couple at reception. What changes between day one and day three is not the room, which was already pretty in the photo. It is the discovery that a trip for two gets bigger when the place takes part in it: the funny story is not just yours, it is yours plus the Argentinian couple from the kombi plus the waterslide. The privacy stays intact behind the dome’s door. The world is what got closer.
